Ebook Prices Compared

Where is the cheapest place to buy ebooks in Ireland ?

Maybe you are thinking of buying an e-Reader and you are wondering if the prices of eBooks are cheaper on Amazon or on other online book sites. It would be no good buying an e-reader only  to find that the books it uses cost twice as much as other formats.

We did a quick random comparison of prices for a few ebooks on Easons , Waterstones  and Amazon.   (Prices checked September 2011)

Amazon had the overall lowest prices when the total cost was added up for all ebooks.

Half of  a Yellow Sun
  Waterstones £2.99 (€3.44) Amazon $5.43 (€4) ; Easons €8.73  ;

Room by Emma Donoghue -
  Amazon $5.43 (€4.00) ;    Waterstones - £6.39  (€7.35) ;  Easons €9.11

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Amazon  $5.23 (€3.90)  ,     Waterstones £6.39 (7.35); Easons €9.11  ,

Brooklyn - Colm Toibin

Waterstones  £3.99 (€4.58)    Amazon $7.29 (€5.41)   Easons - €7.49

Sister by Rosamund Lupton

Waterstones £4.99 (€5.74)         Amazon $8.34 (€6.19)  Easons €5.99 ;

Atonement -  Ian Mcewan

Amazon  $8.99 (€6.66) ;    Waterstones £6.67  (€7.67)    Easons €9.49

59 Seconds by Richard Wiseman

Amazon  $9.08 (€6.75)   ;  Waterstones  £7.19 (€8.26)  ;  Easons  €10.23 ,

Total Prices of all ebooks

Amazon  €36.91
Waterstones  €44.49
Easons  €51.42

Kindle books worked out the cheapest with eBooks from the Easons website coming out as the most expensive.

So - in our small survey we have shown that buying a Kindle will probably not mean you will be paying more for your books. It looks like Kindle users will probably have the lowest priced eBooks.

If you want a Kindle reader and you live in Ireland - you can buy it from Amazon.com.

Uk residents - including Northern Ireland can buy Kindles from Amazon UK

If you buy a Kindle - you can only use it to read Kindle format ebooks.
Irish residents  need to buy their  Kindle books  from Amazon.Com

Where to buy Ebooks in Ireland

The past year or two we have seen a big rise in the popularity of eReaders . Ebook readers such as the Kindle and the Sony Reader will be on many people’s Christmas lists this year . After Christmas many people will be ow looking to buy or download some ebooks to read on their brand new eReader.

If you have a Kindle reader from Amazon - then you are tied to getting your ebooks in Kindle format - which are only available from Amazon.  The Kindle will not read other formats and Kindle format books cannot be read on other e-Readers. you can’t buy Kindle books unless you have a Kindle reader registered to your Amazon account. Irish residents must buy Kindles and Kindle Books from Amazon.Com not Amazon UK because of copyright and publishing rules.

Irish residents can also buy the Kindle online at Viking Direct - with free next day delivery anywhere in Ireland.

Other ebook readers can cope with various formats of e-books that are more widely available to purchase and download - the most common ones are Epub and PDF

Book Depository no longer sell ebooks -

Waterstones online bookshop also sell ebooks - and they are available for Irish residents too.

You would expect the prices of ebooks to be cheaper than those of printed books - and usually they are - but we have seen a few examples of ebooks being more expensive than the same  printed book from the same website!

Free Delivery to Ireland at Amazon

If you spend over £25 pounds on one order at Amazon - you can now get Super Saver delivery - ie. free delivery to Ireland. Delivery charges for a single book are normally  £4.98 - so this represents a serious saving on larger orders.
See what you can buy at Amazon now. They deliver almost everything to Ireland now - apart from TVs and childrens clothes
Amazon’s cheap prices were often cancelled out by delivery charges to Ireland - but now we can get the same great deals as UK customers. (They still have to add on the extra Irish VAT though - which is about another 5% on all prices.).
NB: Make sure the seller is shown as Amazon UK - because other sellers are allowed to sell on Amazon - but most don’t deliver to Ireland

Amazon Now Deliver Anything to Ireland

It has got to be the online shopping news of 2009 for Irish residents. Amazon  have (quietly) started shipping all products to Ireland. Up to now we could only get Cds DVDs and Books from Amazon  - but as from April 2009 you can buy Games Consoles, , Cameras, Laptops, Camcorders, Tools, Clothes, Electronics , Video Games, Lawnmowers - basically anything.
I tried it - and there were none of the usual "there is a problem …." message at checkout. So it could be bad news for many other online shops that are priced in Euros and deliver to Ireland - unless they start droopping prices.

Amazon in Ireland

It will be interesting to see how Amazon cater for the large amount of Irish customers that will be ordering large items . Delivery charges are quite good - for example for large electronic items the charge is £6.98 for the first item in an order plus £1.99 for each item after that.  Get over to Amazon now to see the bargains before they change their mind!

Note: There are still some items that cannot be delivered to Ireland by Amazon.ie : Televisions, Childrens Clothes, Car Seats, Blank DVDs/Cds  Light Bulbs, Medicines, Mobile Phones.
Also - some items on Amazon are sold by other sellers - be aware that most of the other sellers don’t deliver to Ireland.

If you want to buy a TV online in Ireland try  Electrical Experience - Delivery starts at £39.99 but prices are good.

You could also try Pixmania and Komplett for a good range of LCD and Plasma Screen Televisions with delivery to Ireland.

Asda Delivery in Ireland

Asda - the UK based shop owned by Wal-Mart - was rumoured to be buying Dunnes Stores in Ireland in late 2008. Asda.ie is not an active web site at the moment - but Irish residents can get some goods delivered here direct from the Asda Uk Site.

At the moment it is just the entertainment stuff like Video Games , Books Cds and DVds that Asda will let Irish customers order online. (Of course Asda will deliver everything to Northern Ireland including groceries.  ) There are rumours that Asda may be doing deliveries of groceries  to Ireland in the future - the differences in duty should  prevent them from delivering Alcohol though.

Visit the Asda Web Site here - and see the bargains they have.

(April 2009) Asda are not doing grocery deliveries to Ireland  (yet) - but there is a  company called Recession Bus tours who apparently will deliver your Asda orders to addresses in all areas of Co. Dublin and "surrounding areas " for €25. (on top of the Asda delivery fee) You have to ask Asda to drop it of at a Lisburn location and then this third party deliver it on to you. It remains to be seen  if  Asda will continue to allow customers in Ireland to get deliveries via a third party . (Tesco and Sainsburys are not allowing it). (PS- Note - It is probably classed as smuggling if anyone orders alcohol or tobbacco in this way.)

Your Own Indoor Shopping Centre

The weather is horrible out there this weekend - wet and windy. If you want to do your shopping and keep dry - you have your own shopping centre at your fingertips. Keep warm and dry and shop online. Save money on petrol and parking charges. No need to eat out or buy rubbish snacks. No traffic jams, no queues or headaches. This weekend is probably the last weekend before Christmas to shop online to be sure of delivery in time for Christmas.

Some of the best online shops with delivery to Ireland can be found here - you could sort all your Christmas shopping out in a couple of hours
My favourites are:

Amazon - for books , cds, dvds - the prices are great and if you order 3 or more the delivery charges are not bad at all. For deliveries to relatives in the UK it’s the best way to buy presents - no need to wrap or post them - Amazon do it for you!
Pixmania - for everything you could buy at the likes of PC World or Dixons or Currys (They are all owned by the same company)

La Senza  or Figleaves for lingerie

Play - for XBox Games, Nintendo DS Games And Playstation Games

Apple - for all your Ipod needs

Buy your Toys Online  from MailOrderExpress

Gadgets and "Toys for Big Boys" from IwantOneOfThose

Perfume from Beauty Bay

Check the links and category menus on thi ssite for more ideas and links to online shops this Christmas.

Amazon for Ireland

Amazon is probably the biggest bookseller in the world . The Amazon.ie  site redirects you to Amazon UK - and they deliver books cds and dvds to  Ireland  (Cheaper than some Irish based online bookshops)

Amazon.ie  Irish Customers Visit Amazon Here

Books delivered to Ireland cost £3.99  ( approx €6 euro) per order plus £0.99 per item (approx €1.50 euro). An order of 4 books would cost about €12 to deliver here - but the savings you can make compared to Easons or Reads can be fairly large - even on Irish books!
Cds and DVds cost less to deliver - just  £1.49 per delivery and    £0.39 for each item.
Airmail delivery time to Ireland is listed by Amazon as  3-5 days, so if you order an item that is in stock you should receive it 4-6 days after placing your order. To get orders delivered to Iris addresses by Christmas you should probably be placing your orders on or before 15th December 2007

I did a quick price comparison today - in advance of the upcoming Christmas shopping rush and was quite surprised at what I found.

I found that buying books online in Ireland  can  works out cheaper on Amazon UK than on Easons online shop.
Delivery charges within Ireland from Easons - surprisingly cost more than Amazon UK.
Three books from Easons would cost €13.50 for postage - the same 3 books would be delivered by Amazon to Ireland for £6.94 GBP  - which is about €10.50 euro. (Easons do have a max delivery charge of €21.)

A quick random price comparison of  3  popular books on Amazon and Easons websites  uncovered the following:

Anne Enright - The Gathering €14.99 Easons ; Amazon price £6.49 (€9.75)

Guinness Book of World Records Amazon Price £9.00 (€13.50)    Easons €19.99

Making Money - Terry Pratchett: Amazon UK price £9.49 (€14.25)  Easons - €14.42

Every book chosen (at random) - was cheaper on Amazon. Buying 3the books at Easons online with delivery to Ireland would cost you about €17 euro more than buying them from Amazon.

Breakdown of Delivery Charges:

Easons charge €6.50 for the 1st book and €3.50 per book after that (max €21)

Amazon UK charge £3.99 per order of books and £0.99 per book in the order.

Amazon or Reads Books - which is cheapest

As part of our short survey into online book prices in Ireland - we have done another  quick comparison .ie  3 books from Amazon and Reads Books.ie -  delivered to Ireland.
The same comparison last week betwen Easons and Amazon - resulted in saving of over 17 euro by using Amazon. Prompted by a post on boards.ie saying how cheap Reads books were I have done a similar comparison. The three books are actually promoted by Reads and Easons as some of their special offers - but they were still more expensive than Amazon.

The Gathering by Anne Enright, The Guinness book of Records and Making Money by Terry Pratchett would cost 50.92 euro delivered from Reads - but only 44.44 euro from Amazon. Obviously there may be books that are cheaper at Reads - but I doubt if there will be many.
For books delivered in Ireland it still looks like Amazon is cheapest?
