 Amazon.co.uk has been offering free delivery to Ireland on orders over £25 for about 2 years now. There is still no www.Amazon.ie site - but there is really no need for one.

With  the Euro still fairly strong against Sterling - it also means that prices work out cheaper than buying in Ireland. Amazon have hundreds of employees in Dublin and Cork and Amazon charge Irish VAT - and pass it on to the Irish Revenue. (So shopping online at Amazon isn’t as bad as shopping up North)

Many people might not be aware that you can shop at Amazon and also get free delivery to all the following countries in Europe  : Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Andorra, Finland, Gibraltar, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, UK, Vatican city, Poland. 

Until August 15th 2011 Amazon also offer FREE Super Saver Delivery to Australia, India, New Zealand and South Africa.

If you spend over £25 pounds on one order at Amazon - you can now get Super Saver delivery - ie. free delivery to Ireland. Delivery charges for a single book are normally  £4.98 - so this represents a serious saving on larger orders.

Amazon’s cheap prices were often cancelled out by delivery charges to Ireland - but now we can get the same great deals as UK customers. (They still have to add on the extra Irish VAT though - which is about another 5% on all prices.).
NB: Make sure the seller is shown as Amazon UK - because other sellers are allowed to sell on Amazon - but most don’t deliver to Ireland

 

Amazon UK  have today changed some delivery charges for Ireland and other countries in Western Europe.  See the Delivery Rates Here

Orders for Cds, DVDs, Books, Video Games and Toys are not affected by the changes. It affects  items such as electronics, tools, Beauty products etc. These items will be charged for delivery to Ireland at a rate of £4.50 per order and £0.50 per Kg weight.
It will actually mean a drop in postage charges for many lighter items such as Ipods, Digital Cameras, Hand Tools , Power Tools . Before now - delivery charges were £4.99 per order and £1.99 per item for electronics and tools etc.
Previously an order of 1 compact camera would have cost £6.98 for delivery to Ireland. Under the new charging method - it will now be £4.73 (£2.25 less).  Ordering 2 of the same camera - brings the Irish delivery charge to just £4.95. Under the old charging method - this would have been £8.97

Heavier items at Amazon UK   will now cost more to deliver here  - but nothing too excessive.

Adding an item such a a DVD to an order containing a bigger item will still add 39p to the  delivery charges.

Amazon will deliver all electronics (except TVs to Ireland now - so you can by everything from books, clothes,tools,cds, consoles at Amazon.

It has got to be the online shopping news of 2009 for Irish residents. Amazon  have (quietly) started shipping all products to Ireland. Up to now we could only get Cds DVDs and Books from Amazon  - but as from April 2009 you can buy Games Consoles, , Cameras, Laptops, Camcorders, Tools, Clothes, Electronics , Video Games, Lawnmowers - basically anything.
I tried it - and there were none of the usual "there is a problem …." message at checkout. So it could be bad news for many other online shops that are priced in Euros and deliver to Ireland - unless they start droopping prices.

It will be interesting to see how Amazon cater for the large amount of Irish customers that will be ordering large items . Delivery charges are quite good - for example for large electronic items the charge is £6.98 for the first item in an order plus £1.99 for each item after that.  Get over to Amazon now to see the bargains before they change their mind!

Note: There are still some items that cannot be delivered to Ireland by Amazon.ie : Televisions, Childrens Clothes, Car Seats, Blank DVDs/Cds  Light Bulbs, Medicines, Mobile Phones.
Also - some items on Amazon are sold by other sellers - be aware that most of the other sellers don’t deliver to Ireland.
